The Advantages Of Steel Roofing

Steel roofing is one of the best choices that metal roofing has to offer. I say this because galvanized steel is strong, yet flexible and it allows a lot of spraying and coloring techniques which can make it resemble just about any classic roof that you can imagine.

As with all metal roofs steel roofing is prone to major thermal contractions and expansions. This is why metal roofs have a rather different philosophy than classic tile roofs. These are roofs that are meant and allowed to move. On the other hand the flashing work is also subjected to the same restrictions, so installing them on a metal roof is considerably easier. As a side note I recommend that you use for flashing the exact same materials as on the roof itself. This can prevent many problems relating to different expansion ratios.

Installing steel roofs is also a breeze although I wouldn't exactly recommend to the DYI community. As a matter of fact steel is a pretty dangerous material to work with. After it has been resized those edges can cut like a knife through butter. Protective gloves are a must and you should always take care. The installation process is rather simple, but I advise you to take it slow to avoid any accidents. I have seen work accidents even at people wearing protective gloves. Never assume that you are safe and if you are not sure that you can handle it alone get some help.

Typically steel roofing is much speedier than classic roofing, but the no walk over installed surfaces still applies. Not because steel can break, but because steel surfaces are very slippery. On low slopes you might get away with it, but on sharp slopes it is a big no-no.

Another important fact to keep in mind is that steel roofing still needs overlapping to prevent water intrusion. This means that you will have to buy more steel sheets to cover the entire roof area.

Steel as all metals does not make a good temperature insulation. For this you will need additional layers of insulators beneath it. Keep this in mind especially if you want to make an attic. Ventilation is also crucial to avoid water vapor condensation. Some systems are created with this in mind as they allow natural pathways for water vapors to exit. A proper installation is required to use these features to their fullest.
