Paper or Plastic? Plastic, of course--Plastic Roofing Options That Is
When looking for quality roofing materials, we want something that will prevent leaks, remain durable, install easily, and cost an affordable amount. Plastic roofing fills all the needs in a variety of forms. Plastic Membranes Plastic membranes are long sheets of TPO, PVC, or EPDM typically used on a flat roof. You will see plastic membranes mostly in the commercial area where hospitals, schools, office buildings, and such use a flat roofing system. However, some residential homes will have a flat roof and need a plastic membrane as well. You will see more of these homes in the southern regions where snow build up is not a problem. The plastic membrane provides a barrier against leaks because any seams are sealed together. Because of plastic's sensitivity to UV rays, the membranes must be protected from sunlight as well as heat and other harmful weathering conditions. This is often done by applying a UV protective coating on the plastic. Plastic Roofing Tiles Plastic roofing tiles have several advantages over slate, ceramic, or wood tiles; and they are becoming more popular. Plastic roofing tiles are much lighter in weight, which makes them easier to install. They are affordable and attractive. Their durability will depend on the UV and heat stabilizers used as well as the fade resistant colors since plastic is vulnerable to the sun and other elements. Corrugated Plastic Panels Clear or tinted corrugated plastic roof panels are popular around the home and garden. These lightweight panels are easily cut to fit and install in areas that need light to pass through the roofing system such as on carports, sheds, patio canopies, or green houses. Made of sheets of PVC, these affordable plastic roofing panels usually have around a 10-year warranty. With high fire resistance and relative durability to a wide range of temperatures, corrugated plastic roof panels can be an attractive, economical option for roofing these types of areas. Colors are usually clear or translucent, but they can be found in tints of white, green, and brown, as well. Polycarbonate Polycarbonate is another type of plastic alternative to PVC. Used for the same applications, polycarbonate plastic roofs can be found at many of the same suppliers who provide PVC plastic roofing. Since the chemical make-up of polycarbonate is somewhat different than PVC, it can withstand impact, weather, and extreme temperatures better. Whether you choose PVC or polycarbonate plastic roofing, you will get a versatile roofing material that will beautify your home or garden project. Plastic membranes are also useful protectants against water leakage on flat roofs. Plastic has made roofing easier and more affordable.
