Warranties And Architectural Shingles

Architectural shingles are not all made equal. It would be nice if they were but life is not fair and the fact is that you could very well get stuck with bum shingles on your roof. That is why there are warranties in place, at least on the good roofs. These warranties will help you to cover the cost of any repairs or replacements that you might need if something goes wrong with the roof too soon. Even crappy shingles should last you for a few years and if they don't it is nice to know that your warranty has you covered because the cost of a new roof, even a cheap one is a lot.

The problem comes in when people start looking into the warranties to determine how good their shingles really are. Just because a warranty says that you are covered for 50 years does not mean that the shingles are gong to last that long. It also does not mean that you will get a free roof put on if they don't. Warranties are tricky things and there are more loopholes in most of them than you would see in a tennis racket.

Warranties have become a tool that the architectural shingles manufacturers use to sell their products. They say, oh look at our shingles they have a 45 year warranty and that other brand only has a 7 year one. We are obviously a better brand for your home. But that is not always the case at all! If they don't feel that they should pay the entire cost of getting a new roof put on then they won't do it, it is that simple. They may pay some but rarely will they pay all.

When you are buying architectural shingles you need to make sure that you are choosing the best brand not just because they have the best warranty but because they really are the best. Talk to your roofer and see what he has to say about your options and what he feels are the best shingles. He is the one replacing them all the time and he should know what brands hold up the longest in your local climate.
